The University of Texas Investment Management Company (UTIMCO), is the first nonprofit corporation formed by a public university. They are the investment portfolio management firm for the University of Texas and Texas A&M University systems and are the largest public endowment fund in the nation. UTIMCO is the 3rd largest among schools, preceded only by Harvard and Yale. Their goal is to allow the Texas universities to continue offering world-class education, healthcare, and resources for discovery by delivering long-term investment returns.

Since 1999, we have been managing all of their marketing needs.  This year, we are celebrating the 27th year of design and marketing services with this long-term client.

CHALLENGE

Challenge

In 1996, when UTIMCO first opened its doors, it required an annual report to show investors the value of their investment management. The company searched for the right design team for two years before finding a reliable partner with TruBrand. UTIMCO approached us, seeking attractive reports and branding collateral to leave a lasting impression. Our creative work has continued to impress for over two decades as TruBrand has remained its steady partner through rebranding the company, two website redesigns, 25 annual report packages, providing all of their communication collateral, original photography, and years of successful growth.

The 2025 Annual Report theme, “Honoring the Past. Shaping the Future.”, reflected this legacy and momentum—pairing present-day financial narratives with historic imagery dating back to 1876, including the discovery of the Santa Rita No. 1 oil well in 1923, the moment that set the foundation for one of the most impactful endowment funds in higher education.

Today, UTIMCO supports more than 400,000 students across 15 academic institutions and enables over $4.3 billion in annual research expenditures, amplifying its impact well beyond financial performance.

GENERATIONS OF PHOTOGRAPHY TAKEN

At TruBrand, we pride ourselves on providing customized artwork and experiences for our clients. One way we deliver this is with our original photography services. Many media agencies rely solely on digital stock images that can impersonalize a company’s brand.

Throughout the past 27 years, we have supported UTIMCO’s growing staff with annual photoshoots capturing employee work lifestyle and committee imagery, taking architectural images of their office’s high design, and CEO-featured photos and staff headshots. Our original photography conveys the brand’s authenticity and highlights the people who work for UTIMCO.

Since the beginning of our long-term partnership, UTIMCO has grown into one of the most respected investment organizations in the nation. As of 2025, UTIMCO manages $67.6 billion in assets, even after an extraordinary $2.7 billion distribution to beneficiaries across The University of Texas System and The Texas A&M University System. Their team has expanded to 126 employees, led by a leadership group that embodies innovation with integrity—a steady balance of forward-thinking strategy and principled management.

While UTIMCO’s investment success is driven by their exceptional internal expertise, it has been an honor for TruBrand to support their marketing and storytelling efforts for 27 consecutive years—a relationship that has outlasted seven CEO tenures and continues to grow stronger.

We look forward to continuing this partnership into 2026 and beyond, advancing one of the longest-standing client relationships in TruBrand history.

Results

Since beginning its long-term relationship with TruBrand, UTIMCO has increased the size of its endowment funds under management significantly, from $11 billion in 1999 to $70 billion in 2023. Their staff has grown from under 20 to 121 employees. While we are not responsible for their excellent investment strategies or successes, it has been an honor to have been able to support them and their marketing needs every step of the way for the past 25 years. Our long-term relationship has outlasted seven of their CEO terms (including two interim CEOs) and is going strong.

We look forward to the new project on board for 2024.
